Camp consists of three days of three hours each, usually from 9-noon to avoid the heat. I teach safety first and kids wear helmets while riding. Because safety around horses is extremely important, kids need to come prepared to listen, follow the rules, and stay aware. Long pants and sturdy shoes are required. I have helmets, but they can bring their own bike helmet if they wish. Campers will create a memory book of information and pictures to remember their time and what they learned.
Most camps will have a schedule similar to the following:
Day One - Get to know each other, tour the farm and meet the animals, horse safety, quick grooming and tack lesson, short ride on the horses starting with horse being led, learn to stop the horse.
Day Two - More in depth lesson about grooming and tack, longer time riding the horses, learn how to direct the horse through an obstacle course, and have some mini lessons about horse care and health.
Day Three - Finish the books to take home, practice the obstacle course, have more mini lessons about horse breeds etc, and participate in a final "horse show" where campers demonstrate for each other how they can ride through the obstacle course.
Each day the kids will participate and learn how to take care of a horse, which includes feeding the horses and cleaning up some manure. I want them to get an idea of what it is like to take care of a horse.
Parents are welcome at the camp anytime. They can stay and observe or drop in. They are required to follow the safety rules around the horses like their campers.
Some of the lessons and break time will take place in the barn where it is cooler, but most of the camp will be outside with the horses. We will also have time for visiting and learning a little bit about the chickens and sheep and bunnies. The campers get to enjoy the farm. Water and snacks will be provided during our lessons and time working on the memory books. Your kids will have fun, learn a lot, and come home hot and dirty.
I (Jenny Hsiao) am the only adult teacher at camp, so I like to keep the number of kids to 3 or 4 so that they can get a good amount of one on one time with the horse under my supervision.
Beginning horse camp costs $100 for three days of three hours each day. That includes the book, water and snacks. Sometimes if the chickens are laying lots of eggs the campers will bring home fresh eggs too. Ponderosa Farms Horse Camp is an unforgettable experience!
